Our Region Sports and Recreation

Halifax is a four seasons, family oriented city. If you look in any direction you will be impressed by the abundance of activities that await every member of the family.

Halifax enjoys an abundance of water; both Fresh and Salt varieties. This feature means that it is one of the best places in Canada for water sports, from surfing to sailing to power boating. The region of Halifax boasts several excellent yacht clubs and world-class beaches are located within thirty minutes of downtown Halifax and Dartmouth.  There are also a number of great water sport outfitters poised to take outdoor enthusiasts on canoe, kayak or surfing adventures.

Greater Halifax boasts fantastic recreational facilities. From the Halifax Commons, to numerous Regional Provincial Parks and countless bicycle trails and sports facilities, there is something for everyone in the family whether you are active or simply want to watch.

Winter sports are also in abundance in the region. Hockey of course was born in Nova Scotia (don't tell anyone from Kingston or Montreal I told you!) and we boast excellent minor hockey, recreational hockey and of course a great Major Junior hockey franchise the Halifax Moosehead. Skiing is available at Mount Martock or Wentworth Valley ski centres each within an easy drive of metro.

Halifax is also home to a number of universities that boast excellent sports and recreation programs for our student population.  The St. Mary's University Huskies are the reigning 2003 university football champions for all of Canada.
