Our Region Areas

Greater Halifax is a regional municipality and was founded in 1996 by an order of the Provincial Legislature, through the amalgamation of the City of Dartmouth, the City of Bedford and the Halifax County Municipality.

The community covers hundreds of square kilometres from Hubbards in the West, to Sambro in the south to Moser River in the East and Elmsdale and Upper Musquodobit in the North. Throughout this vast region one will find numerous rural municipalities and hamlets as well as the central urban municipalities that visitors from elsewhere in Canada will more readily recognize.

The major towns and cities that form Greater Halifax include the former Cities of Halifax, Dartmouth and Bedford as well as towns such as Upper and Lower Sackville, Waverley, Fall River, Hammond Plains and Spryfield but to name a few.
